Help with KanduMap
Answers to common questions, and how to reach us.
Getting started
- Install KanduMap while you have signal. After that it needs none: the whole chart is inside the app.
- When asked, allow location "While Using the App" so the chart can show your position, speed and course.
- Read the safety notice on first launch. It is always available again from the menu under "About this chart".
Questions
- Does KanduMap need mobile data or Wi-Fi?
- No. The chart, island names, FADs and route planning all work with no connection, far out at sea.
- Why does it say "GPS lost"?
- The phone has had no new position for a few seconds, so the speed and course shown are old. Check that KanduMap may use your location in the phone's settings, and give the phone a clear view of the sky. Inside a cabin or under a steel roof a fix can take longer.
- What do the colours mean?
- Sand is land, green is reef flat that can dry, and turquoise bands are water from 1.5 m to about 18 m deep, darker where it is shallower. Pale blue is deeper water or depth that is not known. The full key is in the menu under "About this chart".
- How do I plan a route?
- Search for an island or FAD, or tap anywhere on the chart, then choose "Route to here". A smart route takes the shortest way that keeps clear of charted reefs, land and FADs; a straight line goes direct. Press Start to follow it with distance, bearing and time to go.
- How accurate are the depths?
- Depths are estimated from satellite images, not surveyed. Checked against laser depths the model never saw, they were within about 0.35 m in water under 2 m deep, 0.5 m at 2 to 5 m and 1 m at 5 to 10 m. Reefs can still be missing or in the wrong place. Keep a lookout, and use official charts and local knowledge.
- How are FADs kept up to date?
- Each app update carries the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources' latest FAD list. The date of the list is shown in the app under "About this chart". FADs break loose and move, so treat their positions as a guide.
- The chart is wrong somewhere. How do I report it?
- Tap the place on the chart to see its position, then tell us the position and what is really there: a reef, an island, a new harbour, a name. Reports from people who know the water make the chart better for everyone.
- Is KanduMap really free?
- Yes. There is no subscription, no in-app purchase, no advertising and no account.
